I think part of the answer simply comes from Mica 6:8
"He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?"

and 1 John 5:2-3
2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
3For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

So to simply answer your question above "what does He want from us?"
-Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly by keeping his commandments.

-Of course it is a matter of calling by God the Father that he work through his Holy Spirit to change our hearts and minds. With out that calling and the Holy Spirit working within us we might as well be stranded on a dessert island spiritually, or try to attain for ourselves forgiveness of sins solely through the law (impossible), "for none is good but God".
