How the church pleases and displeases our Lord: Rev 1-3

2

The final post about Revelation 1-3 is a summary of the content in each letter to the seven churches. Jesus starts each letter by uniquely describing Himself. He then says what the church does well before going into what He has against each church. He concludes by saying what will be given to those that overcome. I find it sobering to hear Jesus encourage each church in what they do well and convict them in their failures. He always gives those that are willing to endure and obey a path to repentance.

I’ve summarized and split up what the churches did well from where they failed. I omitted anything that overlapped between the churches.

What they did well:
- I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. 2:2
- You have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; 2:2
- You have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary 2:3
- Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 2:9
- You hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you
- I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first 2:19
- you have kept My command to persevere 3:10

What He has against them:
- I have this against you, that you have left your first love 2:4
- have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam… to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality 2:14
- You allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols 2:20
- I have not found your works perfect before God 3:2
- You say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked 3:17

  1. Elizabeth P. Acosta says:

Our Lord Jesus Christ is Great, Wonderful and Merciful God who died for our sins and let us live. He redeemed our souls. That is all I can say.

  2. Well, it is for ALL ages? Could get discouraged looking around today, but I thank the Lord I can keep a right spirit, keep my eyes on Him, and have the ability with all the (good) teaching out there to “hang in there.” Leonie Cooksley
