When We Get It Wrong by Dominic Smart
I really enjoyed this book by Dominic Smart. I’m a huge fan of Christian books that are less than 150 pages and this one comes in at just over 90. You won’t find any repetitive nonsense used to fill pages here.

We start off hearing a fresh perspetive on what it means to be a Christian. The culture in our churches does not always align with what we find in scripture. Mr. Smart explains how legalism has seeped into the way that many of us practice our faith. If we allow that to happen we often come to God with our works in mind instead of coming on the basis of “God’s abiding work for us in Christ.” A better way is available to us when our lives are in Him and for Him.
The heart of the book talks about the process of discipleship. As many of us that are called into God’s kingdom are also called to be disciples of Christ. As disciples of Christ we must be secure in Him and not our works, zeal or understanding. There is a great section in chapter three that shows the difference between being a excited and seemingly dedicated Christian and being a true devout follower of Christ that is secure in Christ alone.
As we go down the path of discipleship we should know that we will face temptation and sometimes failure. Chapters four and five talk about how to draw near to Christ during these times and find our way back after failure.
I appreciated the way the author shows some of the errors in modern Christian culture. We need to change the way we think about Christianity and Jesus Christ. We fail ourselves when we paint The Lord as an image of kindness that will never allow us to be sifted as weat, like Peter was. If we are living for God we will face trials. Through these trials we will grow cexercise/>loser to the Lord as long as we abide in Him and believe that our failures are covered in God’s grace.

One of my favorite books. I read this about 2 years ago. Had to order it from England. Then we used it in our Women’s Bible Study – and still had to order from UK. Now see it’s available on Amazon, finally!
This book is a corrective to Legalism. Smart points to the Gospel. Most serious Christians can identify with Peter, we try so hard – and we get it so wrong. Smart offers wonderful correctives and encouragements.
Thanks for the review. I hope this book gets a wide reading.
