Christians – Stop taking God’s name in vain

2

Everyone knows it’s wrong to take God’s name in vain. Sadly we still hear so many Christians say “Oh my God”, or “Jesus!” I can’t understand why we as Christians have allowed this to slip into our culture, but we have, and it’s wrong. For many people the word “God” has lost its meaning because the word itself applies to so many things. It has become a simple phrase in all languages.

It’s so important that we realize how powerful the names of God are. Jesus, Jesus Christ, God, Yahweh – these names are full of power. They are the names we use to call upon the Almighty God. And yet we sometimes use His name in vain? We use the same name to address God as we pray as we do to express frustration or slang? We should be ashamed if we ever call out His name as a expression of frustration or anger. And Christians especially cannot say it is just an expression because to us, God is actually our God, our creator and our King.

I think most Christians that are taking God’s name in vain just need to be kindly made aware that what they are doing doens’t please God. Most probably don’t realize exactly what they are saying or they have allowed their conscious to be closed in this area. Of course it’s very important to be full of grace if you ever confront another Christian about this. I’d start just by asking them if they realize that they just took God’s name in vain. You don’t have to tell them about how wrong it is because chances are they already know. Bringing it up is enough.

Remember God’s name is Holy. We should use His name with holy fear.

Sometimes when I am really angry I will take God’s or Jesus’ name in vain. Then I feel really, really bad afterward. I confess it to the Father based on 1 John 1:9 and He forgives me. But, oh for the self control and patience and reverence to not do that ever again.

What I want to do, I don’t; and what I don’t want to do, I do. O wretched man that I am. Who will deliver me from this body of death? Jesus Christ.

Give me a heart of flesh, oh Lord. Take my heart of stone and massage it into a living breathing God responsive instrument for your use. I need you to. I can’t do it.

  2. Agree. You are right on this point. I also don’t even type OMG…. I type OMGoodness.
